Hemp heals

Hemp Seed-Eating Village in China Holds Oldest, Healthiest People in the World

For months we have been pouring organic hemp seeds into our vegie smoothie three times a week!!
I came across this article with increased awareness of the way others in the world benefit from this God given seed. It is over 8000 years old. The most sustainable plant on Earth. It only takes 3-4 months to grow. It is grown without pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. And it is medicine.

Scientists found some of the oldest living citizens in China  as compared to the global average, well over 100 yrs satisfied themselves with plant based foods and exercise and hemp seeds. Their diet consists of less salt, sugar, animal proteins and fat but very high in Omega 3 and 6 which contains essential fatty acids. Without that, the brain would not have nutrition. It provides the oxygen the brain craves and is rich in calcium, iron and fiber.

The name of the village is Bama Yao. It is one of the Centurian hot spots in the world where one can live a long healthy life. The other places known are called "blue zones". Sardinia Italy, Okinawa off Japan, Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica.

Omega 6 is important for making certain hormones. By themselves they signal the molecules for inflammatory response. But together with Omega 3's a balance is created. In hemp seed oil the ratio is 3:1. Many of you know Omega 6 is in the foods of the regular American diet so Omega 3 must be added in substantial amounts or inflammation sets in.

Hemp is high in cannabinoids but lacks the THC ( delta 9 tetrahydrocannabinol ) THC gives psychoactive effects.

What is of concern is that the federal government has the authority to seize hemp farming in our country because it falls under the Controlled Substances Act which does NOT differentiate between marijuana and hemp. Hemp has a myriad of uses as example:
  • Paper
  • Plastics
  • Clothing
  • Jewelry
  • Rope
  • Building materials
  • Cooking (hemp oil)
  • Food (it won’t get you high)
  • Skin care products
  • Animal and bird feed
  • Animal bedding
  • Water and soil purification
  • Weed control
  • Clean fuel

North Dakota, Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Oregon, California, Montana, West Virginia, and Vermont  have all passed legislation to make the cultivation of industrial hemp legal. But in an effort to avoid conflict with the feds, they are waiting for the DEA’s permission. They are waiting, and waiting.

Fortunately, legislators in Washington, D.C. are taking matters into their own hands. Senate Bill 359 and House Bill 525 (Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2013) is making its way through bipartisan halls and seeks to establish that “marijuana” as listed in the Controlled Substances Act, does not include industrial hemp. With the passage of this law, we could once again stand to reap the rewards of this remarkable plant.

More Health Reading

Next time you buy a magazine full of advertisements or read a comic book or watch the news or decide to just eat away your evening on the couch, buy one or more of these books from Amazon or your local bookstore and read for your health. :))

What should we be reading for health?

Let's go back to the seventies. Who was our idol then? Bernie Siegel, Adele Davis? Health food was some kind of archaic idea wasn't it? We all preferred to read the poets, the philosophers, maybe the biography of Paramahansa Yogananda or watch Jack La Lanne do calisthenics while we sip our coffee?

There are more health and self improvement books on the market than ever. Then, why are we not engaged?
Eco toxic environments and food poisons?
                                                                                         Educate yourself.

Liver Health
highlight, copy and paste in your browser to see.

What happens to our liver when we eat processed foods?

1. Moodiness
2. Depression
3. PMS Pain
4. High Blood pressure
5. Headache
6. Muscle Weakness
7. Eye-vision problems
8. Anger disorders

Huffington Post had an article on the subject:

Garlic helps your liver activate enzymes that can flush out toxins. It also has a high amount of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing says holistic nutritionist Hermeet Suri.
Eating or drinking grapefruit juice can help your liver flush out carcinogens and toxins. This fruit is also high in both vitamin C and antioxidant properties.
Beets are high in plant-flavonoids, which can improve the overall functions of your liver.
Leafy Greens:
Leafy greens like spinach and lettuce have the ability to neutralize metals, chemicals and pesticides that may be in our foods, and act as a protective mechanism for the liver, Suri says.
Green Tea:
Green tea is full of plant antioxidants known as catechins, which have been known to improve the functions of our liver.
Adding more avocados to your diet can help your body produce a type of antioxidant called glutathione, which is needed for our livers to filter out harmful materials, Suri says.
Crucferous Vegetables:
Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and Brussels sprouts also increase the amount of glucosinolate (organic compounds) in our bodies that helps create enzyme production for digestion, Suri says.
We all know citrus fruits like lemons are full of vitamin C, but lemons also help our bodies cleanse out toxic materials and aid the digestion process.
Used as a spice, tumeric has been known to help our bodies digest fats and stimulate the production of bile. It can also act as a natural form of detox for your liver.
Walnuts are also high in glutathione and omega-3 fatty acids, which help support our liver through its cleansing process.

It is going to take a proactive position to care for your liver, the most amazing organ in your body.
Read some excerpts in care2care:

So, it’s no surprise that the liver can become sluggish, making it a factor in many health conditions, including: allergies, arthritis, asthma, bad breath, chronic fatigue syndrome, cravings for sweets,  depression, environmental illness/multiple chemical sensitivities, fatigue, fibromyalgia, headaches and migraines, hepatitis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, hypoglycemia, hormone imbalances, immune system disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, overweight or obesity, poor digestion, recurring nausea and/or vomiting, skin diseases, and ulcerative colitis.

Here are 15 ways to give your liver a boost:
1.  The liver requires high amounts of vitamins and minerals to perform its many functions.  Your diet should be high in fruits and vegetables and fibrer-rich foods.
2.  Your liver must filter food additives.  Eliminate processed foods, artificial food additives, colors, and preservatives from your diet to give your liver a break.
3.  Eat plenty of fresh carrots and beets, both of which are powerful liver cleansing and rebuilding foods.  In addition, eat plenty of green foods.  The chlorophyll, which gives plants their green color, helps cleanse the liver.
4.  Try to eat two heaping tablespoons of ground flaxseeds.  They bind to hormone receptor sites, preventing excess hormones including synthetic xenoestrogens from plastics and other chemicals, from floating around your bloodstream.  One of the liver’s five hundred jobs is to filter excess hormones.  By eating flaxseeds and flax oil you are helping it function more effectively.  Flaxseeds can be sprinkled on cereal, toast, salads, or blended into smoothies.

How We Heal

It doesn't matter if our MD, or our Chiropractor or our Naturopath or our Acupuncturist tells us we are sick, probably sicker than we realize some serious changes need to be put in place, then a proactive regimen must be in order. We are captain of our ships and need our Doctors as lighthouses to help us navigate to safer shores. To assume the Doctor is the commander and to place all in their hands to carry you over the threshold is folly. We must be informed, awakened to what WE can do. How many of us get informed, do the research and care enough to know every detail?

Auto immune responses are the prelude to the devastating diagnoses we all hear about.

The other day Dr asked me "What do you think the largest organ in the body is?" My sure-footed medical training urged me quickly to respond. "The Skin!"  Well I was wrong.

He spoke out, "The Cell Membrane!"

So why isn't this vital information indelibly written in my brain? Because we study microbiology and it is just one more thing to memorize for the tests. But as of the last years much has been scientifically revealed about the cell membrane and how VITAL it is. It is the gateway to whether we will be sick or in health. So the protocol is to "Fix the membrane and the body can heal itself."

What has been discovered is that the body needs to be supplied with specific lipids ( phospholipids). It is the life raft for the cells over run with toxic waste. We can all agree that the Standard American Diet suffers from beneficial fats. The Low Fat diet is an insult to the biologic. Our brains are composed mainly of fat so why deny the very molecules of fat that heal?

We all studied about the mitochondria in the cell. Did you know that now there is a fast growing disease called Mitochondrial disease that has no answers for treatment? It is affecting our young. There are certain lipids that make up the mitochondria's membrane and when that membrane is damaged, it loses its battery charge thus impairing the flow of protons and electrons across the membrane. What then do we have? Chronic Fatigue Syndrome!

There are key questions to ask yourself if you wonder if you have cell membrane damage:
1. Are you lacking in 6 servings of organic fruit and vegetables in your diet?
2. Any inflammatory symptoms that end their name in "itis"?
3. Heart or Cardiovascular symptoms?
4. Ongoing aches and pains?
5. Risk of or ongoing diabetes?
6. Diminishing eyesight acuity?
7. Age spots- brown spots on your skin?
8. Premenstrual syndrome, menopause symptoms or other hormonal imbalances?
9. Senior moments of forgetfulness or memory issues?
10. Fatigue, hypothyroid symptoms or feeling chilled?

We ask ourselves where on earth does all the inflammation come from?

Antibiotic use that changes the gastrointestinal microbiome, GMO foods, toxins, food additives, toxic environment for starters. Fast food for 30 yrs used trans fats and it is thought to be a primary culprit of cell membrane damage. They clog the membrane and have already been proven to be the major cause of heart and CV disease as well as hormonal dysregulation that leads to the big C. Margarine was a big fool of Mother Nature and altered fats in the diet.  How many of our Mothers used "Imperial Margarine" to bake with? Mine did!
Pesticides is a big contributor to inflammation in the cells. You may say you do not have the gardeners spray anymore but what about your neighbors spraying? And your workplace? Pesticides change the electrical potentials across the membranes. On top of which the liver cannot detoxify quickly leading to neuro diseases like MS and Parkinsons, including brain dysfunction such as anxiety, depression, faulty hypothalamus. Big Pharma has plenty of meds to address that. How many people are on antidepressants or anti anxiety pills? Our own son told me most of his co-workers in the computer industry are on all kinds of prescription drugs to bring them up then down! Pesticides across the globe is truly a mark of the beast.

GMO- Genetically Modified Organism - is the food we grew up with. Organic is the food most probably our grandparents and great grandparents enjoyed. Now we are facing the increasing concern with buying the right food in the right grocery store. Now over 85% of all corn products in the U.S. are GMO.  That is found in breakfast cereals, popcorn, ketchup, barbecue sauce, canned corn, grits, tortillas, chips.  Here is some trivia:

Non GMO corn contains 437 times more calcium, 56 times more Magnesium and 7 times more Manganese.

GMO corn was found to contain 13 ppm of glyphosate  compared to zero in non GMO corn. We have come to understand glyphosate is the ingredient in pesticide, herbicide spraying and Monsanto's Round up. It also contains high levels of formaldehyde, 200 times more than the amount found toxic to animals! I hope you all remember that formaldehyde is embalming fluid! Make sure you never buy the nail polish with that ingredient.

The EPA standard for glyphosate in our water supply is 0.7ppm yet we have documented data that in animals the standard at 0.1 ppm creates organ damage!

Back to Cell Membrane Balance. It is the key to healing. Not the hormonal therapy, the thyroid drugs, the insulin for diabetes, not the steroids.  Simply giving the cell the nutrients it desperately needs.

When the cell membrane is warped, damaged and inflamed, the receptors just do not work effectively. Hormones interact at the cell membrane receptor site and need to "dock" there. If damaged, the hormones run freely in circulation thus causing more trouble. With free running estrogens we see cellular proliferations in the endometrial lining and breasts giving rise to breast and uterine cancers. The cause continues to be unchecked with giving estrogen drugs. One side effect of that is heart disease. And why do we have a huge rise in infertility?

Diabetes should never be. If the mitochondrial membranes that regulate glucose cannot and because it also is about the free radical process and ATP energy we have a disease process in motion. If the distress is corrected, a major part of the glucose imbalance equation is solved. But what we have in reality is hundreds of billions of dollars funding the cure to diabetes via toxic drugs.

What does the Mitochondria need?
It requires oxygen, glucose and a host of Citric Acid Cycle nutrients like Co-Q 10, acetyl carnitine, B vitamins, alpha ketoglutarate, lipoic acid etc just to make ATP chemical energy. ( Remember the Kreb cycle in school science studies?) With insulin resistance the mitochondria cannot make the ATP needed, and inflammation levels rise, glucose is stored as fat, smooth muscles are thickened and the arteries elevate Blood Pressure.

Cholesterol is vital to the cell membrane. Did you know that a lack of beneficial cholesterol  (cholesterol sulfate form ) is heart disease? Cholesterol repairs the heart's mitochondrial membranes! This is why statin drugs do more harm than good. When we see elevated cholesterol on the blood tests it is the body's attempt to repair damaged cell membranes!

When Dr. Cart tests your body, he will evaluate if your system is ready for accepting the supplements that repair cell membrane.

Your Adrenal Glands

Feeling a little tired or anxious? Having trouble with sleep? Time to look to Adrenal Function.

Quick anatomical and physiological description:
The adrenals are two small glands weighing 3-5 grams and located just above the kidneys. They have a high rate of blood flow per gram and a high Vitamin C content per gram in the body. The outer zone is called the Cortex and accounts for 80-90% of gland secreting your steroids (cortisol, DHEA-S and aldosterone). The inner zone called the Medulla comprises of 10-20% of gland and secretes catecholamines (epinephrine and nor epinephrine). Remember the three main adrenal stress hormones are :

Symptoms of Adrenal Gland Problems

  • Alcohol intolerance
  • Anxious/Nervous/Irritability
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Chronic pain
  • Craving for sweets
  • Dry and thin skin
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Food allergies & sensitivities
  • Headaches
  • Heart palpitations
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Low body temperature
  • Mental depression
  • Poor memory
  • Premenstrual tension

A normal rhythm for the adrenal glands would be highest secretion in the morning and lowest in the evening.  This is called the circadian rhythm. Anything that disturbs that rhythm can be influenced by
mental/emotional, biochemical and physical stressors.

How can you evaluate your adrenal glands function?

If you have a hard time rising in the morning or have a low energy throughout the day, as well as poor blood sugar regulation you may have abnormal adrenal function. Your cells are having difficulty producing energy. If there is reduced tissue repair and increased tissue breakdown, you may have muscle and joint wasting with chronic pain.

If the morning cortisol levels are elevated we do not build well and prone to osteoporosis. Stress is the enemy of the bones especially in women.

Various immune cells ( white blood cells) cycle in and out of the spleen and bone marrow. The immune system follows the cortisol cycles so if there is disruption especially at night, the immune system is adversely affected.

It has been known that short and long term stress suppresses the immune response to the lungs, throat, urinary and intestinal tracts. This can reduce the surface antibody - secretory IgA. Thus, resistance to infection occurs and allergic reactions are said to increase.

If you have sleep disturbance it may mean your cortisol levels are high interfering with REM sleep. If chronic, it can cause reduced mental and physical vitality and subsequently depression.

Higher cortisol levels also interfere with normal regeneration of skin health.

At the cell level, the cortisol level controls your thyroid hormone production. If symptomatic there may be poor adaptation of the adrenals.

Think about your diet. Within 30 minutes after consumption gluten grains can create allergic responses in the body, especially at the gut. 20%  ( or more as of late ) of the population suffers from this. If the intestine becomes inflamed, cortisol increases and DHEA decreases.

(excerpts from Pure Prescriptions re: Underrated Adrenal Glands)

Lab tests that check cortisol levels:  adrenocorticotrophin stimulation test
                                                      corticotrophin releasing hormone test

Those tests show if the adrenal gland is secreting adequate amounts of cortisol.
Dr. Cart does evaluate the adrenal gland function via Nutritional Response Testing using select remedies. Muscle strength is an adequate design to check the body's intelligence for what it needs to restore normal function. Sometimes it becomes much more complex as other glands enter into the bigger picture. This is evaluated in detail during Nutritional testing.

NOTE WELL: Licorice be it in herbal compounds or tea or as candy, stimulates the cortisol levels, causes a rise in blood pressure as well. The Medical community warns against any pregnant woman eating licorice. Licorice is also known to cause heart irregularity. It causes a drop in potassium levels. Patients are told not to eat licorice if on blood pressure pills, diuretics, estrogens, heart meds. The reasoning may be that it interferes with detox of drugs via liver. (excerpt via WebMD)

Gluten Intolerance: A Review

What Is Gluten?

Gluten is not a protein itself but rather a protein composite, composed of the proteins glutenin and gliadin (in wheat), secalin (in rye) and hordein (in barley), which are elastic proteins in the protein family known as prolamins. This unique protein composite is insoluble in water and comes from the endosperm (see the accompanying picture) within the seeds of grass-related grains.

Gluten's Origin: Endosperm

Gluten intolerance school site makes reference to three distinct categories.
Non-celiac gluten sensitivity
Wheat allergy

Celiac is a disease process whereby the proteins in the gluten trigger the immune system to over-react with strong unusual antibodies. These antibodies wear down the villi that line the intestinal walls. The villi are responsible for nutritional interaction absorbing vital nutrients. When that cannot happen, the villi slowly is destroyed and an inflammatory process begins. This is associated with leaky gut syndrome where undigested proteins and toxins move thru the wall and into the bloodstream. Sometimes, a nasty gluten intolerant rash occurs.

Wheat allergy is different. It is a histamine response to wheat, much like a peanut allergy. It is a type 1 hypersensitivity. Many feel this reaction right after wheat is eaten and stomach discomfort occurs. It involves certain white blood cells to respond to immunoglobulin E. ( IgE)

Non-Celiac Gluten sensitivity was defined by the medical community as of 2011. Tests for celiac and wheat are negative ( in the medical modality only, not in the Nutritional Response testing modality that is performed by Dr. Cart) This definition is the result of combined theories that if the protein is removed from the diet and slowly re-introduced when health is improved, then the sensitivity was there but eliminated. This definition is new to the world of gluten sensitivity so the evaluations are ongoing. What is true, is after a Nutritional Response Testing program has been maintained for a period of time, certain food substances can be re-introduced without reaction, i.e. eggs, oats going to wheat free gluten free oats, or those allergic to rice may be able to tolerate rice once again. This is the importance of monitoring and clearing toxins, metals, chemicals, foodstuffs that are reactive for a period of time.

15% of the population is gluten intolerant. Remember, this is data formulated. We can only wonder how many people have these symptoms and do not find help. Silent symptoms can go on for years!

1. Compromised digestion: gas, bloating, pain, cramping, nausea, diarrhea or constipation ongoing. Inclusive of children who have these symptoms after eating. Malabsorption caused by gluten.
Children who present a stunted growth or a failure to thrive biology.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis Symptoms

Dermatitis Herpetiformis Rash
Dermatitis Herpetiformis symptoms typically first appear in the early years of adulthood between 20 and 30 years of age. Patches of very small pink to red blisters initially appear on the back of the neck, buttocks, back and other extensor surfaces. It can be distinguished from other skin conditions by the extremely itchy sensation caused by the disease, leading a patient to have a very strong desire to scratch the affected region. On some occasions, the itchy sensation appears well before the blisters begin to the form. The blisters are full of a watery substance, and the blisters may weep in more severe outbreaks. Dermatitis Herpetiformis is one of the more tangible and visible gluten allergy symptom.

2. Keratosis Pilaris. small bumps on the outer side of arm and back and sometimes forearm as allergic responses to foods
3. Fatigue and brain fog, lactose intolerance, especially after eating gluten foods. We see this often in people who have to go to sleep immediately after a meal.

4. Hashimotos thyroiditis, dry hair, brittle nails, severe hair loss, rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, lupus, multiple sclerosis diabetes, Graves disease, as example of auto-immune diseases. There are so many that exist and no reason or cure is offered by most medical Doctors. We know this because we assist a family member with a very rare immune suppressed disorder into a Doctor's office and we get the same response directly from them. All they can offer is steroids which are wonderful in life saving situations but intrinsically damaging in chronic conditions.

Why this happens is still a mystery. While some combination of genetics, toxins (environmental triggers), drugs, bacteria and viruses are believed to be at the root of most autoimmune diseases, the medical community still can’t predict or explain the exact trigger for most diagnosed autoimmune diseases.
5. The neurological system off balance. Dizziness. This is sometimes seen as ataxia or uncontrolled motor movements.

6. Hormone imbalance, PMS, infertility, hypoglycemia.

7. Migraine headaches ongoing interrupting a normal lifestyle.

8. Chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia.

9. Inflammatory process ongoing in joints, fingers, knees, hips.

10. Mood swings, anxiety, depression.

Another main concern in our practice is gluten sensitivity in children. We see successful results in our children patients and then look out at the world of children who cry and whine until the parent gives them a treat, children who have outbursts inappropriately, children who have stunted growth because their intestine is not absorbing nutrients, children who are depressed with sullen eye stares, children who have continual rashes, eczema or unexplained lesions, children who break down and are in Doctor's offices frequently with colds and sore throats, children who will not eat whole food but prefer the sugary, glutenized carbs. We all know these type of kids. We see them in the markets, amusement parks, Church, schools, playgrounds. We see the interaction between their parents and we see the control issues. If we do not create a fence of protection around these children, giving them nutritional support before they reach a point of serious trouble, our legacy will be broken. The basic truth is that our world is inundated with toxins, dead food resources, fast food places on every corner, unsafe food practices in select restaurants, tired parents from working, being rushed and not interested in preparing a wholesome meal. We need to be conscious, awake and alert to what is happening in front of our eyes. The temptations and distractions of unworthy food is the lure. It is a a temporary satisfaction with long term liability.

Adults with the above symptomology need a course in education and this is possible through all internet links regarding gluten intolerance and gluten sensitivity. We applaud our patients and the parents of our little patients who have designed a better life for themselves and are dedicated to long lasting health. However, they all know this. It is putting on armor and taking a defense stand. It is taking the time to read ingredients. It is making food fun that is nutritious and kind to the body. It is waking up.

Thank you Gluten Intolerance School link for your invaluable additions to this blog!
